IT ONLY TAKES SIX SECONDS: KEY LEARNINGS ON EMOTIONAL RESILIENCY IN THE WORKPLACE

Let’s face it: the marketing and advertising industry can be stressful. Due to the different developments in the field, it has become even more crucial to create great work in a short span of time. Lots of people in the industry also have ‘buhay ahensya’ stories that may sound funny, but are actually quite stressful!

Recently, ‘work-life balance’ has become even more important and relevant. It’s something job applicants look for in companies, and something that all employees want to achieve. At VCS, we strive to look for ways to create this much-needed balance for each of our team members. We want to make ‘buhay ahensya’ more rewarding for everyone.

Thankfully, we were able to discover the Emotional Resiliency at Work seminar. The talk was held by the People Management Association of the Philippines.

Here are a few of the things we learned from the experience. We hope that these key takeaways inspire you to practice emotional resilience and help others do the same!

Turns out there’s more than just a triangle! One’s happiness relies on SIX aspects of well-being: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and financial.

The key to finding happiness is to balance these six aspects. This is why a high salary can’t pay for losing quality time with your family or why a high position at work sometimes isn’t worth a 6-hour commute.

It pays to assess how you are doing in these six aspects, so that you’ll be able to address the key concerns that are causing you stress.

Six Seconds to Solve

Six is also the magic number of seconds that it takes to make a situation better — or worse. We learned that it only takes six seconds to process a stimulus in your thoughts, then into your feelings, before deciding how to react to it. This short span of time can make or break a situation, depending on how you react. It can mean the difference between giving a calm, cool-headed response, or starting a shouting match!

The next time that you find yourself confronted by a stressful situation, maximize these six seconds and gauge how you should best react. Chances are, you’ll find yourself making more mindful decisions that will benefit you in the long run.

Let’s Talk About Feelings

Talking about feelings isn’t exactly the most natural thing to do at work, yet these feelings are everywhere and in everyone! In order to become emotionally resilient at work, companies should: 1) keep their employees highly-engaged; and 2) create a culture of openness and communication.

This makes people more willing to talk about their feelings and it helps them learn how to process their emotions in a healthy way. Among the members of your team, cultivate a culture where healthy sharing is encouraged and listening is appreciated.

Team VCS is grateful for learning opportunities that help us improve our company’s culture and dynamics. We know that the key to happy employees are healthy employees — healthy physically, mentally, and yes, socially as well!
